Art of Suicide

ART OF SUICIDE is the story of the Whitehall loft, home and hang-out to a band of bohemians and their dreams. This eclectic group of young, starving artists struggle for success and test how far they’re willing to go and get it. It’s about the relative strength and delicacy of relationships — how far they bend, and how far they should be bent.

Paintings, poems, plays, and movies — it’s just another day at White Hall Studios, an eclectic commune of young artists and bohemians alike. Painter Joel Mallon and his eager band of friends are out to put themselves and their studio on the map. But just how long can an artist get rejected, overlooked, and written off before his “big break” comes? It’s at a time like this, when nothing seems to be going his way, that Joel thinks he’s hit a creative wall. That is, until a muse arrives in the form of his friend’s free-spirited sister Megan. Joel suddenly becomes possessed by an artistic fire, and an innocent conversation about how artists only get famous after they’re dead really makes him think … The regulars of White Hall soon learn that the effects of suicide travel far beyond the fate of one angst-ridden individual. Art of Suicide examines the delicacy of relationships and the challenges faced by the wannabe working artist. How far are you willing to go to promote yourself? Where do you draw the line?

“This film was masterfully executed. Bent Brooks’ excellent direction of five unknown actors from Athens, Georgia created a slowly unfolding story of idolism, Idealism, and jealousy between five bohemians living by their wits and skills. As the five friends come together to form the White Hall Studio, emotions become complicated as some of the group has more success than others in their chosen endeavor.”

I think this film should be seen by art/theatre/music, higher-education/ AP high school students. There are themes and plot lines in this film that can be studied and I think be pulled by a screen-writer for major motion pictures. Go for it all! It’s good! It should be seen.”

Art of Suicide was shoot in the scenic and film friendly town of Athens, Georgia. Athens provides everything a filmmaker could ever want, from both urban and rural locations all within minutes of each other. The source of major support stemmed from, Film::Athens, the foundation responsible for supporting recent independent features such as “Somebodies” and “The Gallon Challenge”. The foundation supports the film maker in making key contacts, scouting potential locations and guiding the movie’s overall production. In addition original songs from the music rich town played a key role in the films final mood as music from “King of Prussia” and “Courtesan” plays a key role.

“I really loved the story in this film and the acting was wonderful. It was refreshing to see such a great well rounded film.” ~ Miss Movie, Indie Fest
“This film was masterfully executed. Bent Brooks’ excellent direction of five unknown actors from Athens, Georgia created a slowly unfolding story of idolism, Idealism, and jealousy between five bohemians living by their wits and skills. As the five friends come together to form the White Hall Studio, emotions become complicated as some of the group has more success than others in their chosen endeavor. One is a writer, another a painter, an actor and a filmmaker and a fifth is a wild card as she first come’s on the scene straight out of Art School and becomes a bit of a muse. What transpires is a beautifully composed film orchestrated by Brooks and buoyed by intense and incredible acting from his entire cast. The cinematography was stunning as Brooks chose to create a painterly look with muted tones and splashes of color which meshed perfectly with the movie’s theme and “vibe.” The camera moves slowly and carefully with purpose and the actors movement within those frames create some well composed sequences. Some of the frames seemed to be paintings themselves and if the frames were taken and blown up, I would happily hang them on my walls. This movie is a surprising little gem with a bold and satisfactory resolution.” ~ Pericles Lewness, Director
“Great film. I thought it would be more of an homage to a lost friend. Boy, was I surprised! It’s actually a narrative that is brilliantly directed and acted. The script stumbles a few times in it’s plausibility (I’m a plausibility nut) but the dialogue and characterizations are right on. The director and writer really found such interesting characters to watch, that I wanted to see more of them. A weekly series, perhaps. Athens rocks!” ~ Unknown, Indie Fest

Owner of Blank Stage Productions, Brent Brooks has served as a Director and Executive Producer in the film and television industry for well over 12 years with commercial work appearing on ABC’s “Good Morning America” and “Regis and Kelly”.
Art of Suicide, winner of the “Best Underground Film” award at last year’s Indie Fest, is Brooks’ second independent feature film and showcases his talent as an “actor’s director”. Brooks was also honored with a “Davey Award” by the International Academy of the Visual Arts for his documentary The Artisan Resource Center: A Creative Enterprise.
Using the story structure outlined in “Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey” Brooks has pioneered a new film brainstorming technique called “ImprovAstorm”. Brent also manages “The Blank Page” screenwriting meetings and the “Under Budget”, producer’s meetings.
