Screenwriter in Georgia: Troy Moore

More Happy Vs. Sad

We had the chance to sit down with first time screenwriter Troy Moore to discuss his process for writing “Happy Vs. Sad”.  As a collective member of Blank Stage, Troy has been a staple in the “Blank Page Screenwriting” group. His script has been chosen to go onto “Under Budget”, Blank Stage’s producing team. Here Troy will work out his investor package for his film. The next step is for “Happy Vs. Sad” to be produced into a feature alongside several other blank stage collaborative projects.

HAPPY VS. SAD

LOGLINE: Opposites attract, but can they find love? A new couple is perfect for each other in every single way, except one. When together, they trigger the other to experience the complete opposite emotion, inducing heightened emotional states and situations that only few could bare.

Who is Troy Moore?

My love for movies started with a flashlight fetish. I had at one time 20 different kinds of flashlights, ranging from snake lights to flood lights. I never knew what to do with my strange obsession until i went to college. I am a graduate of the Art Institute of Atlanta, where I learned and fell in love with lighting. Writing was something I’ve always done. From short stories to screen plays, I write to free my mind for new ideas. I wouldn’t call myself a writer, I just do it for fun and freedom. I’m a production guy, really. But I had so much fun writing this script, I think I’ll start on all the others I have locked away in my head.

“Happy vs Sad” is hilarious… and at times all to real….

Happy Vs. Sad is a script that was born form many bad relationships. Relationships that should have never been but for some reason (Sex) I got into, anyway. Its a Dramedy, and it’s a script that everyone can identify with. Two people that are in a relationship even though they are emotional opposites.

Tell us about your process, how was the story created?

I submitted a script to the Blank Page over a year ago. It was blasted and I stopped working on it. I then spent the next year reading various scripts and studying  story structure. Then came time for me to try my hand once more. It was a story I had in my head for many years but never thought I could make it work. But as the first 30 pages came out, It started to write itself. Now I can’t stop! The script is finished, but new scenes pop into my head everyday.

Do you have a process?

It usually starts with a glass of wine and a blank stare at a computer screen. Then I get drunk and talk about scenes into my voice recorder. Once I wake up with my hangover, I sit down and type out the notes from the night before. Then it’s a jigsaw puzzle that has to be put together.

Any major challenges?

The hardest thing about writing this script was keeping track of my characters’ emotional states, since they were switching back and forth so often. But it was also the most fun part. Also,  finding a nice quite place to write is hard in this modern age. I sure I pissed off plenty of people by ignoring phone calls and e-mails. But that’s how  I work. Total separation from the world.

What would compare “Happy vs. Sad” to?

This is like a Ben Stiller romantic comedy. “Good Luck Chuck”, “The Break Up”. I like snappy dialogue and fast paced humor.

Any massive breakthrough? Purge any demons during the process?

I would have to say that writing this script made me hate my ex-girlfriends much less. They all became purposeful in the end.

Any mentors along the way?

My biggest help in finishing this script was the team at the Blank Page. They were so excited to read it and the feed back that I received made me want to write even more. The Blank Page team truly unlocked the writer in me and forced me to meet deadlines, which I desperately needed.
